Malawians are celebrating the 98th birthday of Catholic Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera of the Diocese of Zomba.
Born on 30 April 1928, Bishop Chamgwera devoted his life to the Church, beginning with his ordination to the priesthood on 7 September 1957. He spent many years in pastoral ministry before being appointed Bishop of Zomba.
He was consecrated on 12 February 1981 and formally installed on 31 May of the same year. Over more than two decades of episcopal service, he played a key role in strengthening both the spiritual life and administrative development of the diocese. He retired from active ministry on 7 January 2004.
Even in retirement, Bishop Chamgwera remains a deeply respected figure within Malawi’s Catholic community, widely admired for his humility, leadership, and lifelong commitment to serving the Church.
