Malawi’s Vice President, Jane Ansah, is reportedly planning a private visit to the United Kingdom accompanied by a 16-member delegation, all funded by taxpayers’ money.
According to documents seen by Cables, Ansah is scheduled to be in the United Kingdom from 26 December 2025 to 10 January 2026, a period of eleven days. The entire cost of the trip, including that of the delegation, will reportedly be covered by public funds.
This development comes at a time when the Malawian government is preaching austerity measures, while ordinary citizens are struggling with a high cost of living, rising taxes, and worsening economic conditions.
It is therefore deeply concerning and irresponsible for the country’s second-highest ranking official to embark on what appears to be an extended overseas trip with a large delegation, financed by taxpayers, during such a difficult economic period.
Such actions raise serious questions about leadership priorities, fiscal discipline, and sensitivity to the hardships faced by Malawians.
