The Government of Malawi and the United Nations have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing national security, effective migration governance, and sustainable development following a high-level meeting held in Lilongwe.
On 4 June 2026, the Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhito, welcomed the United Nations Resident Coordinator to Malawi, Rebecca Adda-Dontoh, for a courtesy call at Capital Hill aimed at strengthening cooperation on issues of mutual national and global importance.
During the discussions, both parties reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between the Government of Malawi and the United Nations, emphasizing the need for enhanced collaboration in areas that promote human security, social stability, and national development.
Speaking after the meeting, Rebecca Adda-Dontoh highlighted the importance of continued joint efforts in addressing migration and security challenges.
“Our engagement focused on strengthening migration governance, border management, combating trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling, refugee protection, community resilience, and institutional capacity development,” she said.
She commended Malawi’s ongoing efforts to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration and reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to providing technical expertise, policy support, and resource mobilization assistance.
The United Nations further pledged support for Malawi’s implementation of key international migration frameworks, including the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, as well as processes related to national migration reviews and global migration commitments.
In addition, the organization expressed its readiness to assist in strengthening the enforcement of Malawi’s anti-trafficking framework through capacity-building initiatives, development of operational guidelines, enhanced victim support services, and improved referral and protection mechanisms.
Minister Peter Mukhito expressed appreciation for the United Nations’ longstanding partnership, noting that its support has played a vital role in enhancing Malawi’s institutional capacity and coordination efforts in addressing migration, security, and humanitarian concerns.
“The United Nations remains a trusted and strategic partner in our efforts to safeguard national security, protect vulnerable communities, and promote inclusive and sustainable development. Through our continued collaboration, we are building a safer, stronger, and more resilient Malawi for present and future generations,” said Mukhito.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in response to emerging challenges while advancing peace, security, human dignity, and sustainable development for all Malawians.
