DPP Youths Allegedly Threaten and Attempt to Bribe Cables Over Creck Hardware Corruption Stories
Cables can reliably reveal that two youths affiliated with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have allegedly been reaching out to several individuals, issuing threats and intimidation in an effort to stop the publication of stories exposing suspected corrupt dealings involving Creck Hardware and other entities.
According to information gathered by Cables, the two individuals specifically demanded that Cables delete articles relating to Creck Hardware’s dealings with the Central Region Water Board (CRWB), transactions at the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB), and a story concerning the Creck Hardware–Nguludi bottling contract.
The individuals reportedly instructed multiple people that Cables must never publish any negative stories or expose alleged corrupt deals involving Creck Hardware, many of which are said to have originated during the previous MCP administration.
Cables can further reveal that the two youths allegedly promised the publication a bribe of MK 250,000 in exchange for deleting the articles in question.
Cables has documented all communications and evidence and intends to hand the matter over to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for further investigation.
The investigation will seek to establish why money was allegedly offered to suppress investigative reporting and what interests may be at stake in the Creck Hardware deals that appear to have caused alarm among the DPP youths and the company involved.
In addition, the two individuals allegedly implicated another person, claiming that if Cables continued to expose the suspected irregularities, that individual would “deal with” those who were being intimidated, citing connections to the owner of Creck Hardware.
Cables has previously published multiple reports detailing questionable transactions between CRWB and Creck Hardware.
As this article goes to publication, Creck Hardware is reported to have flown six people to China for inspection related to a project that was allegedly overpriced and failed to meet specifications for water meters.
This is reportedly happening despite a government stop order on major procurements.
The CRWB Internal Procurement and Disposal Committee (IPDC), allegedly under the influence of Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda and Director of Finance Chifuniro Kalimapanjira, is said to be continuing procurement activities in defiance of this directive.
Cables wishes to assure Malawians that the publication cannot be silenced or bought, despite threats or intimidation.
Cables remains committed to serving the interests of Malawians and President Arthur Peter Mutharika.
We will continue to expose corruption and hidden dealings wherever public funds and taxpayers’ money are involved.
