Following reports circulating on social media and in political circles that former President Lazarus Chakwera was expected to attend the Arsenal championship parade in Lilongwe, questions have emerged over the circumstances that led to the event’s cancellation.
According to information allegedly gathered by security agencies, authorities feared that some political supporters linked to former ruling Malawi Congress Party could take advantage of the gathering to cause unrest and disrupt normal activities in the capital.
Police later informed organisers that they would not be able to guarantee adequate security for the parade.
The organisers, Arsenal Fans Malawi Chapter, subsequently announced the cancellation of the event in an official statement released on 25 May 2026, citing communication from the Lilongwe District Commissioner and security concerns raised during a stakeholders’ meeting.
Few days ago , cables revealed that former President Lazarus Chakwera was planning to join the Arsenal championship parade in Lilongwe, and MCP supporters intended to hijack the event into a political atmosphere .
Recently , Malawi Police dispensed teargas to Chakwera and his MCP followers following an illegal gathering during the Kamuzu day celebrations.
