Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, on Monday conducted a surprise inspection tour of the newly opened By-Pass Market in Lilongwe to assess how vendors are adapting to the new trading environment and to appreciate their day-to-day business operations.
During the visit, Dr. Phiri engaged directly with traders, moving through different sections of the market to understand both the opportunities and challenges vendors are facing following their relocation from former illegal trading sites.
Addressing the vendors, the Minister reaffirmed Government’s commitment to supporting traders and ensuring the market operates in an organized, effective, and sustainable manner. He said authorities will continue working closely with vendors to improve conditions at the market and promote orderly trade within the city.
Dr. Phiri emphasized that Government will enforce measures aimed at preventing traders from returning to recently demolished illegal trading areas, stressing that restoring order in urban trading spaces remains a key priority.
He further assured vendors that Government is committed to providing essential services and infrastructure at the market, including improved sanitation, security, water supply, and proper trading spaces, to create a conducive business environment that supports growth and economic empowerment for small-scale traders.
The Minister noted that properly managed markets have the potential to boost local economic activity, improve public safety, and enhance sanitation standards in urban centers.
Some vendors welcomed the Minister’s visit, describing it as a positive sign that Government is listening to their concerns. They expressed hope that continued support and improved facilities at the By-Pass Market will help them expand their businesses and attract more customers.
The By-Pass Market was established as part of Government’s broader efforts to decongest the city and provide safer, more organized trading spaces for vendors in Lilongwe.
