Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika has asked Malawians to be patient as he works to restore the nation, saying his administration’s performance should be assessed after completing its five-year tenure rather than during its first year in office.
Mutharika was speaking in an interview with the public broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), as he reflects on his first year in office.
The Malawi leader says his government’s priority areas are Food, Fuel, Fertiliser and Forex, which he says are making good progress.
However, Mutharika admitted that it is still work in progress, particularly as his administration seeks to completely address the persistent forex and fuel challenges facing the country.
He said food security remains one of his administration’s major achievements, citing the reduction in food prices and improved availability of food as some of the gains made during his first year in office.
Mutharika is now asking Malawians to give his administration more time and judge its overall performance at the end of the five-year mandate.
He also expressed satisfaction with the development and strides his government has made so far , saying over 50% of the things he had set to resolve in his first year have been addressed .
He further asked Malawians to join hands in building the nations regardless of political differences, tribe and other factors.
