Over $911 Million Stolen Under MCP Administration Excluding Salima Sugar , NEEF Scandals
A review of notable audit irregularities and public scandals linked to the Malawi Congress Party administration between 2020 and 2025 , indicates that a combined total of approximately $911.3 million has been stolen or went missing under the watch of former President Chakwera from the government coffers .
The figures are drawn from several major financial scandals highlighted during the period, including:
In 2022 Government Audit Irregularities reported that $842.5 million could not be accounted for due to financial irregularities and non-compliance in government accounts.
As that is not enough , Greenbelt Authority Scandal has it on record that $21.1 million went missing allegedly connected to misappropriation linked to political campaign financing.
The Zuneth Sattar Scandal drained $30.5 million associated with inflated government contracts and alleged profiteering.
When it comes to purchase of fertilizer which was bought at a butchery for Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) . A staggering $17.2 million is reportedly looted which was meant to be agricultural subsidy funds.
Combined, the reported amounts total $911.3 million not putting into consideration of other financial related scandals where money was stolen at Salima sugar and NEEF.
The revelations are shocking and so far nobody has been held accountable within the government institutions particularly those who oversaw such a massive plunder during the MCP-led administration.
Malawians are struggling economically and the state of economy at National level is not well affecting the poor who can’t afford a simple meal and basic needs .
