Independent Member of Parliament for Dowa East, Aida Mchenga, has officially joined the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Speaking to Malawi Cables Online on Monday morning, Mchenga said she decided to join MCP after requests from people in her constituency, adding that the party has always been close to her heart for many years.
The parliamentarian said she is ready to serve the party in collaboration with the people of her area and continue advancing development initiatives in the constituency.
Her move means that MCP in Dowa District now has five MPs, alongside four independent legislators and one MP from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
As of now, MCP officials have not yet commented on the development.
