The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced a reduction in petrol prices for May 2026 following a review by its Energy Pricing Committee (EPC).
According to the new pricing structure effective from 00:01 hours on 8 May 2026, the pump price of petrol has decreased by 6.94%, while diesel prices remain unchanged.

MERA stated that the reduction in petrol prices follows a decline in the average Free on Board (FOB) prices during May 2026 compared to April 2026. The review also considered freight rates, railage, insurance, handling costs, and other import-related charges under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM).
Although diesel qualified for an upward adjustment of 7.56%, MERA said the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) has provided enough cushioning to prevent an increase for the month of May 2026.
The authority further noted that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to place pressure on global petroleum prices and supply chain costs.
By law, all fuel retailers in Malawi are required to sell petrol and diesel at prices not exceeding the approved maximum pump prices announced by MERA.
