Senior Resident Magistrate Austin Banda and High court Assistant Registrar Benjamin Chulu are alleged to have formed a judicial alliance aimed at protecting officials linked to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), sources from the judiciary have confirmed to cables .
Benjamin Chulu, who previously served as Principal Resident Magistrate before his appointment assistant registrar of the High Court towards the end of the MCP’s time in power, is said to have been strategically promoted.
The move is alleged to have been intended to position him as a key figure within the High Court to safeguard the interests of MCP officials after the party left office.
Sources further claim that cases involving MCP officials, which were initially under the jurisdiction of Senior Resident Magistrate Austin Banda, are now being systematically referred to Chulu at the High Court.
These developments are alleged not to be coincidental but part of a premeditated plan established prior to the MCP’s exit from power, with the aim of shielding party members from legal accountability.
There has been no progress on numerous cases that involve MCP officials since they lost power despite committing serious crimes .
