The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited has entered a new phase of leadership following the appointment of Engineer William Kaipa as Chief Executive Officer.
Eng. Kaipa has already assumed his duties, beginning with introductory engagements with the utility’s Executive Management team shortly after his formal introduction by Board Chairperson Alfred Nhlema.
According to the Board, the appointment marks a strategic shift toward disciplined, results-oriented, and performance-driven leadership within the organization.
The new CEO has since commenced high-level briefings with the Board of Directors to gain a comprehensive understanding of ESCOM’s operations, ongoing projects, and financial standing.
On Tuesday, April 14, Eng. Kaipa is expected to continue a series of intensive sessions with key Board Committees, including the Business Strategy and Risk Committee as well as the Technical and Projects Committee.
Board Chairperson Alfred Nhlema emphasized that these engagements are critical to aligning the new CEO with ESCOM’s reform agenda and the operational challenges facing the utility.
“The Board did not appoint Engineer Kaipa to maintain the status quo. We appointed him to drive transformation and restore public trust in ESCOM,” said Nhlema.
Meanwhile, expectations remain high as ESCOM continues to face mounting public scrutiny over prolonged response times to faults, concerns regarding customer service delivery, and questions surrounding procurement priorities in relation to its core mandate of providing reliable electricity.
Eng. Kaipa has been tasked with stabilizing operations, strengthening internal coordination, and improving service delivery at a time when Malawi continues to grapple with persistent power supply challenges.
