The President of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has expressed serious concern following the arrest of a suspect allegedly involved in flying a drone over the official residence of Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Jane Ansah.
Describing the matter as a significant security issue, the UDF leader stated that he has been closely monitoring developments surrounding the incident. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive, transparent, and professional investigation by the Malawi Police Service to establish the full circumstances and intent behind the drone activity.
“The security of the Vice President is paramount and cannot be compromised under any circumstances,” he said. “Any unauthorized aerial surveillance over such a high-profile residence raises critical questions about national security preparedness and response mechanisms.”
The UDF has urged authorities to provide the public with clear and factual information as investigations progress, noting that transparency will help maintain public confidence in the country’s security institutions.
While commending the swift action taken by law enforcement in apprehending the suspect, the party stressed the importance of strengthening preventive measures. This includes reviewing drone regulations, enhancing surveillance systems, and tightening security protocols around key government installations.
The statement further reaffirmed the party’s confidence in the Malawi Police Service and other security agencies, expressing optimism that they will handle the matter with the professionalism and diligence it deserves.
“The Vice President, as the nation’s second-highest office holder, must be guaranteed maximum security at all times,” the statement added. “Ensuring her safety is essential for the uninterrupted execution of her constitutional duties.”
The UDF concluded by calling for heightened vigilance and collaboration among security stakeholders to prevent similar incidents in the future, warning that emerging technologies such as drones, while beneficial, can also pose evolving security threats if not properly regulated.
