The Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is facing growing scrutiny over its recently acquired outside broadcasting (OB) van, reportedly sourced from Italy at a cost of approximately K3 billion.
The vehicle, which is expected to enhance MBC’s live coverage capabilities, has instead raised eyebrows after arriving in the country with visible defects.
Observers have noted dents on the body, malfunctioning windows that cannot be wound up and drained battery issues that have sparked concern about the condition of the unit at the time of purchase.
Currently stationed in Mzuzu, the OB van was seen undergoing repairs, with an auto electrician working to restore its electrical systems, particularly the battery.
Further controversy has emerged over the logistics surrounding the vehicle’s collection. A team dispatched to receive the vehicle at Songwe Border is reported to have been allocated seven nights’ allowances, despite expectations that the process would require no more than two nights.
Stakeholders and members of the public are now calling for transparency from MBC management, particularly concerning the procurement procedures, the valuation of the vehicle, and the condition in which it was received.
As pressure mounts, many are urging authorities to clarify whether due diligence was followed and if the K3 billion price tag reflects value for money, given the apparent state of the OB vehicle.
