Mangochi Police have arrested two men who were allegedly found in possession of elephant ivory at a lodge in Mangochi Township on the evening of 6 September 2026.
Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Daudi identified the suspects as 45 years old Obvious Kakuni, from Kasungu, and 56 years old, Geoffrey Chikoya from Balaka district.
Daudi said police detectives, acting on a tip-off from community members that the two men were offering ivory for sale, found seven pieces of ivory concealed in a black plastic bag inside a sack.
Daudi said the two suspects will appear in court to answer a charge of illegal possession of specimens of listed species without a licence, contrary to Section 110(b) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.
