Five People Have Died And 12 Others Sustained Injuries In Mangochi After A Vehicle Ploughed Into A Group Of People Celebrating Initiation Ceremony

Five people have reportedly died and 12 others sustained various degrees of injuries in Mangochi after a speeding Motor Vehicle ploughed into a group of people celebrating an initiation ceremony in the district.

According to Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Amina Tepani Daudi the incident occurred in early hours of Sunday, 30th August 2026 at Lundu Village along the Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway.

Tepani Daudi said the victims were allegedly dancing occupying both sides of the road when the accident occurred.

Incident involved a two-ton Toyota Dyna registration number MH 5071 which was been driven by Nsami Mwale who was coming from Liwonde towards Mangochi boma carrying soft drinks.

“Upon arrival at Lundu Village the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speeding and hit the group of people who were dancing in both sides of the road,” Tepani Daudi said.

She further said five people sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mangochi District Hospital while other 12 are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Three of the deceased have been identified as 36-years-old Pililani Henry, 16-years old Zainab Mmadi and 13-years-old Fatima Watchi as remaining two bodies who are believed to drummers at the event are not yet identified and are being kept at the district hospital’s mortuary.

According to her the driver is in police custody and is expected to appear in court after completion of paper works and other formalities.
