A customer of NBS Bank has sought clarification from the bank’s management over reports that individual customers are no longer able to access foreign exchange services.
The customer said they visited the NBS Bank Capital City Branch on Thursday to enquire about purchasing approximately US$500 for travel expenses ahead of a planned trip to China in two weeks.
However, the customer said an officer at the Foreign Exchange counter informed them that the bank was only providing foreign exchange services to corporate clients.
“When I politely asked for clarification as to why individual customers were not being served, I was informed that this was a management decision and that the officer was simply implementing the directive,” the customer said.
The customer has since written to NBS Bank management seeking confirmation on whether the restriction is indeed the bank’s current policy.
As a longstanding customer, the individual has also asked the bank to clarify whether personal customers can still access foreign currency for legitimate travel purposes and, if so, the requirements and procedures they must follow.
“I value my relationship with NBS Bank; however, as a customer, I also need to understand the services available to me so that I can make informed decisions regarding where and how I manage my banking needs,” the customer said.
The customer is now awaiting a response from the bank and has requested guidance on how they can access the US$500 required for their upcoming trip if the information provided at the branch was incorrect.
NBS Bank had not yet responded to the customer’s concerns at the time of writing but our publication has sent them a questionnaire for their response.
