Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika has expressed excitement over the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, following their remarkable run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The President was speaking today upon his arrival in Lilongwe from South Africa, where he had travelled for official engagements.
The Scorchers have reached the final of the continental tournament and will face Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in the decisive match in Rabat, Morocco.
Mutharika, who was visibly in high spirits on arrival, said he and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika were wishing the team the very best ahead of the historic encounter.
“The First Lady and myself wish them all the best tomorrow,” Mutharika said.
He praised the team for bringing Malawians together through their impressive campaign, saying the unity generated by the Scorchers was something politicians had struggled to achieve.
“Let me say that the Scorchers have managed to do what we politicians have never been able to do, to unite this country,” he said.
The President further expressed confidence in the team and said he would continue praying for them as they battle for their first-ever WAFCON title.
“I pray for them and I am sure they will do it tomorrow,” he added.
The final against Cameroon represents a historic moment for Malawi, with the Scorchers having captured the attention of the nation through their performances in Morocco.
The team will now have an opportunity to make history by becoming champions of Africa and returning home with the prestigious continental trophy.
Mutharika’s remarks are expected to add to the growing national support behind the Scorchers as Malawians at home and abroad rally behind the team ahead of the final.
