Two individuals arrested in connection with the seizure of approximately US$1.1 million in cash at the Chiweta Roadblock in Rumphi on July 1, 2026, are expected to appear before the court next week.

The suspects have been identified as Paschal Nyanda, 28, and Sanda Donald, 24.
The two were reportedly arrested at around 2:30 p.m. on July 1 while travelling in a Mazda Axella, registration number NE 11400 and upon searching their vehicle , cashing amounting to $1.1 million was seized.
The development is expected to bring the long-running questions surrounding the extraordinary cash seizure into the public domain as the matter formally enters the judicial process.
However, Cables have decided not to publish its exclusive revelations surrounding the case at this stage to allow the court proceedings to commence and to enable some of the information independently obtained by Cables to be validated before we make our final exposure .
The seizure has also raised questions over the apparent silence of key law-enforcement and financial regulatory institutions.
Despite the significant amount of money involved, the Malawi Police Service, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), and the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) have so far remained publicly silent on the circumstances surrounding the seizure and the subsequent investigations.
The silence of the institutions has fuelled growing public interest in the origins of the money, its intended destination and whether the seizure forms part of a wider investigation.
For now, however, attention is turning to the courts.
Cables will continue monitoring the matter and will publish further revelations once the case begins, particularly where information can be independently verified through court records, official proceedings and other credible sources with what we have in our possession.
