Economic Pressures Force Closure of Selected Farmers World, Agola Retail Shops

Meridian a group of companies that manages Agola and farmers world has announced the closure of a number of its retail shops across Malawi as part of a restructuring programme, citing declining financial performance and the need to improve the sustainability of its retail business.

In a Management Circular (No. 01/2026) dated 6 August 2026, the company informed employees that the affected shops of farmers world and Agola would cease operations with immediate effect.

The notice states that the decision follows a review of the retail division’s financial performance and long-term viability.

While the company has not disclosed the exact number or locations of the affected branches, the closures come at a time when Malawi’s economy continues to face significant challenges, including high inflation, foreign exchange shortages, rising operating costs, reduced consumer spending, and persistent supply chain disruptions.

According to the circular, employees at the affected outlets have been instructed to complete stock counts, hand over company assets, and assist with other closure-related activities before being placed on paid leave. During this period, salaries and normal employment benefits will continue while consultations take place in accordance with Malawi’s labour laws.

Management says individual consultations will determine how each employee will be affected, with further communication expected on or before 15 August 2026.

For many years, Meridian’s retail shops have been a familiar presence in communities across Malawi, providing employment opportunities and access to household goods, agricultural products, and other essential commodities.

The closures therefore mark the end of operations for outlets that have served customers for decades in some locations, highlighting the growing pressure businesses are facing in the current economic environment.

Over the past few years, businesses have struggled with escalating costs, unreliable foreign currency availability for imports, high interest rates, and weakening consumer purchasing power.

Economic analysts say retailers operating on thin profit margins have been particularly vulnerable, forcing some companies to scale back operations, restructure, or shut down loss-making branches.

Although Meridian has described the move as a strategic restructuring exercise, the closures are expected to have a significant impact on affected employees, their families, suppliers, and the communities that relied on the retail outlets.

The company has assured staff that the restructuring process will be conducted fairly and in compliance with Malawi’s labour laws, while consultations continue over the coming days.
