Police in Dowa have arrested two security guards employed by Masters Security, a company owned by Minister of Youth Alfred Gangata.
The suspects have been identified as Fadwick Rashid (35), from Thyolo, and Trust Kamwendo (34), from Mulanje. They have been charged with the theft of 220 bags of fertilizer.
According to police, the fertilizer arrived in Dowa by train from Balaka.
Police say that after the shipment arrived, the two guards conspired with the driver of a 20-tonne truck to steal the fertilizer.
After moving the fertilizer, the suspects called their office and falsely reported that residents from Mkukula in Dowa had stolen the consignment.
However, police at Mvera intercepted the truck transporting the fertilizer after the driver failed to produce the required documentation proving the lawful origin of the cargo.
Subsequent police investigations established that the fertilizer had indeed been stolen.
During questioning, the two suspects reportedly admitted that they committed the theft because of financial hardship and low wages.
The suspects are expected to appear in court to answer charges of theft.
