Human rights advocate Edward Kambanje has defended the Reserve Bank of Malawi’s (RBM) settlement with Deputy Governor Dr. Henry Mathanga, arguing that the payment should be viewed as the implementation of a lawful court judgment rather than a political favour.

The settlement has attracted public attention following reports that RBM paid Dr. Mathanga K1.5 billion in benefits after his reinstatement to the central bank following several years out of office.

In a statement, Kambanje explained that the payment stems from a 2025 Industrial Relations Court ruling, which found that the Reserve Bank had unlawfully reduced employees’ salaries in 2020.

He emphasized that the judgment was not specific to Dr. Mathanga, noting that several other senior RBM officials were similarly affected by the salary cuts and have either sought or received compensation arising from the same court ruling.

Kambanje urged the public to assess the matter through the lens of judicial precedent and the rule of law rather than partisan politics, stressing that court judgments must be respected and implemented.

Mathanga resigned from his position when Malawi Congress Party regime made his working environment worse .

Malawians are now paying the price for the stupidity of Malawi Congress Party regime .
