Artists in the country celebrate today as Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) distributed K1.8 billion in royalties to artists under the Blank Media Levy.
Speaking at the function Director of Arts in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Humphrey Mpondaminga said the payout demonstrate the sector’s strength.
Cosoma Executive Director Dora Makwinja has challenged artists in the country to refrain from spreading false information after noticing that such tendency is affecting their operations.
During the function Cosoma has presented royalties to top ten artists in film, music and writing industry that includes artists like Phyzix, Driemo, Saint, Onesimus, Eli Njuchi and Kell Kay.
One of the top ten artists who is in film industry Joyce Chavula praised the recognition as it validate the work of film producers and other stakeholders involved in film, music and writing industries.
Blank Media Levy is a form of compassion given to the creators for private copying of their copyrighted work and is collected by Cosoma in collaboration with Malawi Revenue Authority through importation of media storage devices capable of copying music, films, books and other protected works by artists.
