The Government has approved the extension of validity for all expired National Identity (ID) cards until 1 January 2027, according to the National Registration Bureau(NRB).
The NRB says the decision will allow the bureau to renew, print and distribute about two million expired National ID cards across the country.
The extension is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted access to essential services and preventing administrative or financial disruptions for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as private institutions.
During the extended period, all MDAs and private sector institutions have been directed to continue accepting expired National ID cards as valid identification for all official and transactional purposes in Malawi.
The announcement is contained in a statement signed by NRB Principal Secretary Patrick Machika.
