Allegations of voter roll manipulation have surfaced ahead of Malawi’s 2025 elections, with concerns that Smartmatic, the company managing the electoral system, is deleting names from the voters’ register.
It has been confirmed that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Commissioner at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Hon. Francis Kasaila, is among those affected. His name is missing from the voter roll, meaning he will not be eligible to vote on September 16, 2025.
An audit of the voter register has reportedly uncovered multiple missing names, raising alarm over the integrity of the electoral process. The missing names could result in disenfranchisement, prompting fears of a deliberate scheme to manipulate the elections in favor of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Opposition parties and stakeholders have repeatedly called on MEC to terminate its contract with Smartmatic, citing the company’s controversial reputation and past accusations of voter mismanagement in other countries.
As concerns grow over electoral transparency, calls for urgent intervention are intensifying to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.
