The UDF and UTM Party’s have said Vice President Jane Ansah is being systematically mistreated by the current administration, alleging underfunding, withdrawal of security and public humiliation.
But cables can exclusively reveal that these ministers are acting on their own not on instructions from President Mutharika .
In a statement signed by UTM secretary general Willet Karonga dated March 26, 2026, the party said the treatment of the Veep has created confusion and inefficiency within the executive branch at a time Malawians are facing rising taxes and a high cost of living.
Karonga confirmed issuing the statement in a telephone interview a short while ago.
According to the statement, the most recent incident occurred when Ansah was prevented from performing her constitutional duty of seeing off President Peter Mutharika at the airport before his travel.
The party has said the role was instead taken up by the Chief Secretary, a move which UTM said undermined both protocol and constitutional order.
“The Office of the Vice President is not ceremonial; it is a constitutional institution designed to provide leadership, coordination, and stability. When it is deliberately undermined or rendered ineffective, it is not only a political issue, it is a direct misuse of public resources,” reads the statement in part.
UTM also cites previous vice presidents who, the party said, faced similar treatment, including former presidents Cassim Chilumpha, Joyce Banda, and the party’s former president Saulos Chilima.
The party has called on state institutions and security agencies to uphold the Constitution by according the VP the respect, protection, and support her office demands.
UTM has also urged the Veep to resist any pressure to resign, saying that her mandate is constitutional and she has the backing of the law and Malawians.
