Investigations into the controversial MK5 billion linked to the Amaryllis Hotel deal have uncovered a network of proxies allegedly used to execute large cash withdrawals from National Bank of Malawi (NBM).
Key individuals identified as central to these transactions include:
- Charles Gibson Nankhuni
- Aisha Aubi
- Mark Kaliati
Cables indicate that these individuals acted as front facing agents, conducting high value cash withdrawals on behalf of a wider network linked to powerful interests under the instructions and guidance of Collins Magalasi and some State House operatives.
Charles Nankhuni is reported to have carried out some of the largest withdrawals, including MK1.5 billion in a single transaction.
Aisha Aubi and Mark Kaliati were also repeatedly involved in multiple high value withdrawals, forming part of a coordinated pattern.
Many of the withdrawals were executed using cheques issued by Yusuf Investments, with verification done directly by the bank.
The use of proxies suggests a deliberate attempt to Disperse withdrawals across multiple individuals, Avoid direct links to principal beneficiaries and Move large sums of cash in a controlled but fragmented manner.
Documents reviewed show repeated, high value cash withdrawals over a short period (late January to early March 2026) with approximately 25 separate transactions linked to the same pool of funds.
There was also use of different individuals for similar transaction sizes, indicating role of distribution.
Further, some of the withdrawn funds were deposited into various accounts, including organizations and businesses. Handled by individuals connected to State House operations, including drivers and junior staff
The individuals identified shared several characteristics like no clear financial capacity to justify handling billions in cash independently.
All proxy activity is alleged to have been coordinated centrally by Collins Magalasi with instructions directing:
• When withdrawals were made
• Who executed each transaction
• How funds were distributed after withdrawal
The emerging picture is not of isolated transactions, but of a structured proxy network designed to move billions in cash through the banking system.
At the center of this system are Nankhuni, Aubi, and Kaliati, whose repeated involvement and transaction patterns strongly indicate they were key operational conduits in the flow of funds.
Cables reported those involved in the sharing of the loot including senior cabinet ministers, members of the Presidency family and politics .
