The recent cabinet reshuffle has drawn attention to the distribution of ministerial posts, sparking discussions on whether the appointments reflect a balanced representation or a centralization of power within specific districts.
LILONGWE: The Center of Power?
With 9 out of 18 cabinet positions allocated to individuals from Lilongwe, critics have labeled the cabinet as “The Lilongwe Cabinet.” Key figures include President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and a significant share of influential ministries, such as Trade, Homeland Security, and Foreign Affairs, being led by Lilongwe MPs.
Other Districts
While Lilongwe dominates, other districts like Dowa and Kasungu have a notable presence with 3 ministers each. However, districts like Salima, Dedza, and Mchinji are underrepresented with only one minister each.
Regional Equality or Nepotism?
Proponents argue that this distribution reflects merit and strategic alignment for national development. Critics, however, question whether the dominance of Lilongwe truly serves the “tonsefe” (all of us) philosophy.
A Call for Broader Inclusion
Malawians are calling for equitable representation across all regions to ensure that every district’s interests are included in national policy-making.
