In a revelation that is likely to send shockwaves across Malawi, credible sources allege that 30 well-known mercenaries from Nsundwe are undergoing covert military training at Kamuzu Barracks—reportedly under direct orders from the State House.
The development carries a heavy historical irony. Three decades ago, the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) dismantled the Malawi Young Pioneers (MYP), the armed paramilitary wing of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Now, insiders within the security establishment claim the MDF is once again involved in training a clandestine force. These recruits are reportedly being drilled in firearms and guerrilla tactics, with plans underway to send them to Israel for advanced combat and intelligence training.
Raising further concern is this year’s national budget, which allocates an unprecedented MK67 billion to the State House.
Critics argue the allocation far exceeds any reasonable requirements for governance or development and instead represents a covert war chest—intended to fund private militias, covert operations, and a campaign of intimidation ahead of the September 16, 2025, general elections.
Political analysts and whistleblowers suggest this move reflects a deepening anxiety within President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration, which appears increasingly apprehensive about a potential electoral defeat. With public support reportedly in decline, the regime is allegedly preparing for drastic measures—even turning against the very citizens it was elected to serve.
Sources describe the training as “intensive and highly classified,” claiming it is designed to equip the mercenaries for covert operations involving voter intimidation, suppression, and political violence. In the event of electoral loss, the group could allegedly be deployed as a last-ditch force—a violent instrument to undermine the will of the people and quash dissent.
As Malawi approaches a critical electoral crossroads, these troubling allegations raise urgent concerns about the future of democratic governance—and the extremes to which the current leadership may go to cling to power.
