The embattled Malawi Congress Party (MCP) may have reassured Parliament’s Business Committee that it has no intentions of pushing the Age Bill, but Malawi Cables has uncovered a covert plan to introduce it through the “back door.”
The bill, widely believed to be an attempt to block Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika from contesting in the next election, is set to make its way to Parliament under the guise of a Civil Society Organization (CSO) initiative.
Sources reveal that Agape Khombe—who is currently out on bail for defilement charges—alongside Redson Munlo and Billy Malata, are at the center of the operation. The trio has reportedly received K50 million for the campaign but has only declared a budget of K10 million, allegedly pocketing the remaining K40 million.
MCP is said to have diverted K300 million from public funds to influence CSOs, journalists, traditional leaders, and Members of Parliament (MPs) in support of the bill.
“The bill is coming to Parliament. Chimwendo Banda lied to the Business Committee when he denied its existence. Just watch this space—MCP is desperate and afraid of Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika,” a source disclosed.
Documents seen by Malawi Cables indicate that around 250 individuals from Blantyre, Mzuzu, and Lilongwe will be mobilized—fully funded by public resources—to petition Parliament. Chitipa South MP Welani Chilenga is expected to receive and endorse the petition before presenting a Private Member’s Bill seeking a constitutional amendment.
The proposed bill has already faced widespread backlash from legal experts, social commentators, and political analysts, who see it as an undemocratic move to manipulate the electoral process.
