A man has died in Phalombe in the wee hours of Saturday at Rev. John Chilembwe hospital while others were treated at Phalombe Health Centre after eating wild tubers as an alternative food due to hunger in order to survive.
Sub Traditional Authority Nyambalo and Village Head Chitimbe, told Zodiak today that Wilson Saladi went to Mulanje forest where he dug up the wild tubers to feed his family due to hunger crisis in the area.
Chitimbe claims after consuming the tubers some started vomiting , opening bowels and Saladi was rushed to Rev. Chilembwe hospital where he died in the wee hours today.
Sub Traditional Authority Nyambalo has confirmed the incident, urging the government to start distributing the much awaited relief maize in the district.
Phalombe acting director of health and social service, Dr. Sam Sibakwe, has confirmed about the incident, adding that they received four patients and three of them have been discharged.
