Confidential cables indicate that the Malawi Police Service has been significantly compromised, particularly in the Central Region.
Reports suggest that officers who opposed the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during its time in opposition have since assumed control of key police formations in the region.
Sources further allege that between 2020 and 2025, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) systematically recruited loyalists into the police service, enabling it to secure influence over critical security structures.
This strategy is believed to have been aimed at neutralizing potential threats to its administration at the time.
However, seven months after the 2025 general elections, inside cables claim that many of these MCP-aligned operatives remain embedded within the police service key places.
Their continued presence is reportedly contributing to instability within the country’s security framework.
Additionally, there are indications that certain civil society organizations (CSOs), allegedly working in coordination with MCP operatives, are planning demonstrations in the capital city in the near future.
Concerns have been raised that the current DPP-led government may struggle to manage such developments effectively, given the reported dissatisfaction among some police officers in key positions who are unwilling to accept the election outcome.
Cables warn that unless decisive steps are taken to reform and stabilize the police service in the central region , the DPP government could face significant challenges in maintaining order and authority in the months ahead.
