Former President of Malawi and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, addressed the nation in a heartfelt end-of-year message, reflecting on the challenges faced in 2024 and calling for unity, resilience, and hope as the country prepares for a pivotal 2025 election.
Mutharika acknowledged the economic and social struggles Malawians endured, including skyrocketing prices, fuel shortages, youth unemployment, and a devastating hunger crisis. He described the current state of the nation as a “broken dream” caused by failed leadership but emphasized that Malawi’s destiny can still be reclaimed.
He also condemned the erosion of democracy, selective justice, and threats to freedom of speech. Mutharika reaffirmed the DPP’s commitment to restoring the rule of law and defending the rights of all citizens.
Reflecting on the tragic loss of Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others, Mutharika urged unity and faith in overcoming adversity.
Looking ahead to 2025, he called on Malawians to register and vote, stating that the election is a critical opportunity to rebuild the nation. Mutharika promised a future where affordable food, job creation, and accountable leadership become a reality under the DPP.
He closed with a message of hope, faith, and collective strength for a prosperous Malawi in the New Year.
