Former President and leader of Malawi Congress Party Reverend Lazarus Chakwera has allegedly been barred by the DPP-led government from attending this year’s Kamuzu Day celebrations, according to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Director of Youth, Steve Kamsiyano Malondela.

Writing on his Facebook page, Malondela claimed that the government had stopped the former Head of State and MCP President from attending the function.

He wrote:

“Kamuzu Day ndi mawa. It is extremely sad that the DPP government, in its wisdom, has said former Head of State who is also MCP President, H.E Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, must NOT attend the function. Mwayiwala kodi kuti Kamuzu anali MCP President? Munaletsa makaka achipani mpaka kuletsanso President to attend.

As MCP, tomorrow we are going to remember and celebrate H.E Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda at MCP National Headquarters in Lilongwe. MCP supporters tikumane for mwambo wa mapemphelo from 10:00am mawa.”

There was no immediate comment from the government regarding the allegations made by Malondela.
