CABLES can confidently reveal another disturbing development in the country’s water sector, with the Northern Region Water Board using industrial wastewater treatment chemicals and swimming pool chlorine in the treatment of water meant for human consumption.
Our investigations have established that the supplier involved is Michalis Logistics, the same company linked to the supply of swimming pool chlorine being used by Blantyre Water Board.
Even more alarming, cables can reveal that additional consignments of chlorine and other chemicals not intended or approved for drinking water treatment have been supplied to northern region water board this week.
At Blantyre Water Board, the situation is equally concerning.
Cables understands that the Board has more than 100 drums of the disputed chemicals in its possession, with an estimated value of approximately K500 million.
Public water boards exist to protect public health, not to create opportunities for individuals or companies to accumulate wealth at the expense of taxpayers.
This development is a serious public health and accountability issue.
Malawians deserve safe drinking water, transparent procurement and answers over every tambala spent.
Cables will continue to follow the issue .
