FDH Bank Plc, the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) and FDH Properties Limited have entered into a partnership aimed at developing 10,000 housing units within one year under an initiative dubbed Project 250.
The three institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Lilongwe, paving the way for a collaboration designed to expand access to housing for Malawians across different income brackets.
Under the agreement, FDH Bank will provide structured financing to support the development, which targets high-, middle- and low-income earners, with particular emphasis on affordable housing.
The initiative is expected to contribute to Malawi’s long-term development ambitions under Malawi 2063, the country’s national vision that identifies urbanisation and wealth creation as key drivers of economic transformation.
Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu and MHC Chief Executive Officer Bob Chimkango signed the agreement on behalf of the initiative.
Project 250 comes at a time when Malawi continues to face a significant housing shortage, with the national deficit estimated at more than 1.5 million units. The demand for housing has been rising, particularly in major urban centres such as Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu.
The proposed development could help address part of the growing demand, although the project’s success will depend on the affordability of the houses, access to financing and the speed at which construction gets underway.
However, several key details remain undisclosed, including the total investment required, the locations earmarked for the first 10,000 units, the expected prices for low-income housing and the anticipated commencement dates for construction.
FDH Bank has indicated that further information on financing models and off-take arrangements will be communicated in due course.
As stakeholders await these details, attention will be on how the three institutions translate the agreement into actual housing developments that ordinary Malawians can afford.
