Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka, SC, has urged graduates of Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) to uphold professionalism, integrity and compassion as they begin their careers in the health sector.
Speaking at the university’s Third Graduation Ceremony, Congregation A, in Blantyre on Wednesday, Msaka congratulated the graduates and emphasised their responsibility to protect patients’ dignity, maintain confidentiality and provide quality care.
He urged them to remain innovative, ethical and committed to lifelong learning, even in resource-constrained environments.
Msaka said quality higher education was central to Malawi 2063’s human capital development aspirations, stressing the need for universities to produce skilled professionals while promoting research and innovation.
He commended KUHeS for its contribution to health sciences education and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with the university to strengthen the quality and relevance of its programmes.
In his remarks, KUHeS Vice-Chancellor Professor Macpherson Mallewa highlighted the university’s achievements in research and academic development during its five years of existence.
He cited the university’s sixth-place ranking in Africa for research excellence in 2025, according to the Nature Index, a platinum award for Research Excellence and Governance from KPMG in 2026, and its ranking of 39th in Africa and ninth in Southern Africa in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.
Mallewa also disclosed that plans to establish a Centre of Excellence in pharmaceutical research and manufacturing were at an advanced stage. The centre is expected to support local medicine production and strengthen research and innovation.
He urged the graduates to reject corruption and malpractice, uphold professional ethics and use their knowledge to improve healthcare delivery.
