Things seem to be falling apart within the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as some of its own members are now backing the concerns raised by the Speaker of Parliament.
In a Facebook post that has since attracted attention, DPP member Kalitendere Shukran Richard said putting politics aside, the Right Honourable Speaker is making a point that cannot be ignored.
“Politicians, we must do better! Our responsibility is to serve the people and develop our country, not to enrich ourselves at the expense of those we were elected to serve,” he wrote.
He added that leadership is about sacrifice, accountability, and putting national interest above personal gain.
“Malawi deserves leaders who put the country first, not their pockets. Let us rise above selfish interests and work together for the betterment of our nation. Our people deserve nothing less,” the post reads.
In a surprising confession at the end of his post, Kalitendere wrote: “Including myself I used to be a very good person before koma pano mmmmmm ayi zikomo kumwamba kuli Mulungu.”
The statement comes at a time when the Speaker has been critical of the conduct of some politicians, accusing them of focusing on self-enrichment instead of serving Malawians.
The fact that DPP members themselves are now agreeing with the Speaker is being seen as a sign of growing discontent and division within the ruling party.
Political commentators say this could be an indication that not all is well inside the DPP, with some members feeling the party is losing its direction.
