Malawi Cables has received exclusive footage and eyewitness testimony from Salima.
Yesterday evening at a filling station in Salima, a Toyota Land Cruiser branded with campaign materials for Minister of Agriculture, Roza Fatch Mbilizi, was seen openly filling dozens of jerry cans with diesel.
This is happening at a time when MERA and Malawi Police have launched a harsh crackdown confiscating fuel, impounding motorbikes, and arresting ordinary Malawians found buying fuel in jerry cans. Their argument is that this fuels black market.
But what happens when the law-breaker is a powerful minister ?
The Double Standard is Sickening
A villager in Salima who buys 5 litres for his maize mill is treated like a criminal.
A Minister uses her political power and connections to fill drums of diesel with police watching and doing nothing.
If the Minister of Agriculture, who should be leading by example on discipline and food security, is the one breaking the rules, what message are we sending?
Is she hoarding fuel for her farms? For resale?
Why does she need jerry cans when her own government says it is illegal?
And the law enforcers and MERA will only comes after the desperate Malawians looking for fuel for survival and to keep their businesses running .
Are always made to work on the poor and oppositions only while protecting those in power ?
These are the questions that Malawians must be demanding answers from those in leadership.
