President Arthur Peter Mutharika was a no-show at the Third National Youth Summit, which concluded today, August 20, 2026, despite earlier confirmation that he was expected to attend as Guest of Honour and officially open the event.
A July 14 report by Timveni Online, shared through the National Youth Council of Malawi, stated that President Mutharika was expected to officially open the three-day summit, which ran from August 18 to 20 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.
The summit brought together young people, policymakers, development partners, business leaders and other stakeholders to discuss key issues affecting youth development, including unemployment, education, skills development, entrepreneurship, health, technology and opportunities in productive sectors.
However, President Mutharika did not attend the summit and was absent from its official opening, despite having been billed to officiate at the event. The summit concluded today without the President making an appearance.
As of the time of publication, there had been no official statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet explaining why Mutharika failed to attend an event where his attendance had earlier been publicly confirmed.
In a separate development, Mutharika was also absent from a luncheon organised by First Lady Gertrude Mutharika in honour of the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, following their runners-up finish at WAFCON.
The luncheon was held at the presidential residence, but the President was not present despite reportedly rewarding each player with K5 million.
Mutharika’s absence from the two high-profile functions has sparked public debate, with many questioning why the President has been missing from events where his presence was either expected or where he had been directly associated with the occasion.
