Malawians planning to travel to the United States will now be required to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, to apply for and process their U.S. visas under new visa processing arrangements introduced by the U.S. government.
The change means that the U.S. Embassy in Malawi will no longer handle immigrant and/or certain non-immigrant visa processing (depending on the specific categories affected), requiring applicants to complete interviews and other visa procedures at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
For Malawian travelers, this will result in additional costs for airfare, accommodation, transport, and other travel expenses before they can obtain a U.S. visa. It may also lead to longer travel planning and processing times, particularly for students, business travelers, tourists, and families seeking to visit the United States.
The new arrangement is expected to place an extra financial burden on visa applicants, who must now budget not only for visa fees but also for the cost of traveling to Kenya to complete the application process.
