THEFT OF RESOURCES AT LILONGWE WATER BOARD LEADS TO MPAMPHA, LIKUNI WATER SUPPLY CRISIS

Some households in Mpampha, Likuni, have reportedly had no water supply since the night of Saturday, 18 July, and there are growing fears that the situation could persist for longer as the Lilongwe Water Board continues to face serious financial challenges.

The complete interruption follows more than four weeks of extremely low water pressure, leaving many residents struggling to access one of the most basic necessities.

Cables has established that sufficient raw water is available in the reservoirs.

However, cables indicate that the Lilongwe Water Board is facing financial constraints that have affected its ability to procure the chemicals, fuel, electricity, and other operational requirements needed to adequately treat and distribute water to consumers.

According to information gathered by Cables, the financial difficulties stem from the alleged plunder of the Board’s resources, with claims that some funds have also been diverted to other government operations.

Cables have, on numerous occasions, reported on alleged financial mismanagement at the Lilongwe Water Board, including procurement irregularities and contracts allegedly awarded at inflated prices.

Residents say the prolonged disruptions have severely affected their daily lives, forcing families to spend hours searching for alternative water sources or buying water at additional cost.

Schools, businesses, and healthcare facilities have also been affected by the erratic supply.

The continued water shortages have turned access to clean and safe water into a luxury for many households in the affected areas, raising concerns about public health, sanitation, and the utility’s ability to provide reliable services.

Residents are now calling on the Lilongwe Water Board and relevant government authorities to urgently explain the cause of the crisis, restore normal water supply, and account for the management of the Board’s financial resources.
